eXacteXposure > I wasn't able to attend the 2006 Red Rock Balloon Rally and could have kicked myself since all three days were reported "perfect for ballooning"! Then in 2007 I was in training at Continental Airlines and missed the event again (unfortunately that year the weather didn't cooperate, so It would have been a bust either way). Finally, in 2008 I made the necessary arrangements to attend the rally and crossed my fingers the wind would avoid the canyons of Gallup, NM. With the exception of the Friday night glow the weekend was a success. FINALLY!

eXacteXposure > What really sets this ballooning event apart from others is the way you can interact with the balloons after they leave the field. It's a great event for the kids, just don't forget to look where your walking. Also, if you're out-of-shape you'll feel it as the climbing starts at 6400 ft.

eXacteXposure > Friday morning had had a slight easterly wind allowing me to photo from the western ridge, however on Saturday (pictured above) the western ridge that I climbed the day before was not going to work for great balloon images. By observing the "Pie Balls" and the Dawn Patrol balloons I was sure the rally balloons would stay within the canyon itself, so I took a gamble and hiked 40 minutes along the canyon rim to the eastern ridge. The balloons did remain in the canyon and the majority of the people who stayed on the western ridge (see photo) were looking directly into the Sun the entire morning. Many times you MAKE your luck by simply observing your surroundings.
